What in the world should we wear?
I’m glad you asked! Choosing outfits is hands down the most stressful part of photo sessions. Trust me, I know! Even as a professional I get decision paralyses when I have to choose outfits. What coordinates? What looks good on us? Will these clash? All the questions spiral as you try to choose not just one outfit – but many!
The good news is, when I don’t have to decide for myself – I’m really good at helping with outfits for photos. I can tell you what will photograph well, which colors/patterns compliment each other, and what NOT to wear! So I took the time to put together an outfit guide based off this years locations for Christmas Minis. This is just a guide, not a mandatory shopping list. And please, please, please reach out if you are out shopping, scrolling Amazon, or even just pulling items from your closets and aren’t sure if they work. Styling outfits for sessions is one of my favorite parts of working with my clients.
What not to do!
I’ve found over the years that Moms love to go for the over-the-top frilly Christmas dresses. Decked out with tights, the biggest bow, and shoes. But I’m hear to tell you Momma, your baby will NOT like this! So it’s up to you to decide, do I want a happy baby in a less frilly outfit – or do I want a potentially grumpy little in the most extravagant outfit? I’ve seen it one too many times to not mention it!
Another big No-No is matching. Outfits – colors, patterns, textures, should coordinate, not match! That means if you were planning to all wear those red and black buffalo plaid tops with jeans – just say NO!
Shoes that don’t match!! You spent money on all new outfits that look so good together – but then you put your kids in their red and blue school tennis shoes…OOF! I always tell my clients, “Shoes can make or break your whole outfit.” I promise you that ordering a $15 pair of neutral shoes/boots online will be well worth your investment. You spent the money to have the photos done – let’s make sure they are the photos you expect. Bright colored shoes will be what your eye directly goes to in a photo if they don’t go.
Mom always comes first!
I’m starting off the post with Mom looks. Why? Because ultimately, mom is almost always the one that wants the photos, right? So if she isn’t happy with what she’s wearing – she won’t be happy with the photos! Always start with your outfit and then coordinate everyone else from there.
Dad – Let’s be honest, he’s the easiest to shop for!
Dad comes next because if we’re being realistic, he has something in his closet that’ll work for photos already! If not, you’ll probably just have to grab a new sweater or jacket for him!
Child Look!
Boys
From itty bitty babe to pre-teen mini man – I’ve got you covered! Adapt any of these looks no matter their age!
Girls
They are always the most fun to dress and have the cutest options. Am I right?
